by Matt Gonzalez, President, San
Francisco Board of Supervisors Dear friend, I have decided to run for the District 9 seat of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. I would be honored to receive your endorsement, and your active support, for my campaign. Last year, many community and labor leaders urged me to enter my candidacy for this November election. They believe, as I do, that a grassroots candidate, indigenous to the community, would provide new energy and new leadership, and would prioritize historically neglected neighborhood issues. Many know that I have been working in the community “trenches” for over fifteen years, building power among the most oppressed sectors of San Francisco, namely immigrants, day laborers, and the homeless. I led community efforts to improve police accountability, workers’ rights, immigrant rights, youth in the juvenile justice and educational systems. I helped lead local housing and women’s movements, and spearheaded many policy initiatives. For example, I was instrumental in the creation of the San Francisco Immigrant Rights commission, and served as its first Chair for four years. I organized immigrant workers so that San Francisco was declared an “INS raid-free zone.” I initiated a parent/student effort to pass legislation at the San Francisco School Board that prohibits police from interfering in standard disciplinary matters. Most recently, I served on the steering committee of the San Francisco campaign to increase the minimum wage (Proposition L), and helped write legislation which would prohibit finger-printing and other forms of body imaging as a condition to access shelter beds. I know the issues, am accountable to my community, and have achieved concrete results. One of the most exciting things about my candidacy is that it offers a proactive political program, constructed by the people who will benefit from it. For example, youth are creating our platform on youth issues, and low-wage workers are currently writing our agenda on jobs and workers’ rights. The four “pillar” issues of my campaign are: 1 - Dignified, affordable housing;
